Part one of three. There is a reason for having three parts, but I'm not saying what it is yet. Besides, it's a little silly, but it's tangentially important, and there is a point to this. This involves my take on Hanna, which is implicit here and will become more tangible in the other two parts.

The name of this story comes from Norse tradition. It's a combination of the words seid and madr and literally means 'a man who practices a brand of magic that is considered to be feminine', or 'witchman', for simplicity. Using seid was considered to be unmanly and to drain the practitioner of strength and health. Still, you should bear in mind that the feminine seid was also practiced by the principal god Odin, who I think everyone agrees is pretty badass - and not the least because he's still hanging around, disguised as Santa Claus.

All terminology is lightly borrowed and thoughtlessly used, of course. Hey, the Norse were practically my neighbours, surely they won't mind if I walk in and rifle through their stuff after all those times they stole my ancestors' sheep?

Anu and Morrigan hail from the Celtic pantheon, while Brigh Brigaid was an influential Irish judge around the 1st century CE. Drunken pirates and deadly sins I owe to the band Flogging Molly and their wonderfully catchy song Seven Deadly Sins. If you look up potatoes and the Irish, you're sure to come across the Great Famine, which is a fascinating piece of history once you get over the fact that it's basically a politically sustained mass death. Nancy Drew was brought up by Tessa in the comic, so I assume everyone knows about her already. I'll just mention that she started out a lot more outspoken and was toned down to be less assertive later in the series, which is what Hanna means when he says he likes the the 'original books'.

If you don't know what HPV and barriers are, please do yourself a favour and find out.

Hanna is Not a Boy's Name belongs to vert-is-ninja, aka Tessa Stone. This fic and this info dump are my responsibility. One day I will hopefully also learn to use the userpic linking system.

you're too cool for words, man. i love this. there's all this subtle life stuff in there that makes it perfect, GOD you're good at that. (and i have to put this in here; i'm Irish and Scottish, and my ancestors were notorious livestock thieves. i'm so proud. XD) anywys, yes. your fics are so much yes. your characterization of Hanna is very interesting and way spot-on, seriously, everything here is totally believable and Dots being all worried for a minute if he should shave was pretty awesomely endearing in his character as well.
